๐ฏ Paper-Clip Switch & Steady-Hand Game
Make your own switch from a paper clip, then build a buzzing steady-hand challenge!
๐งฐ What you need
- 2 metal paper clips and 2 brass paper fasteners (split pins)
- A piece of thick cardboard
- About 50 cm of bare, stiff wire (like a straightened coat hanger is too hard; use thick craft wire, unpainted)
- 1 active buzzer or LED
- 2 AA batteries in a holder
- Alligator-clip wires
- Modelling clay or a block of foam to hold the wire
๐ง Let's build it!
- Part 1: Paper-clip switch. Push two brass fasteners through the cardboard about 3 cm apart.
- Hook a paper clip around one fastener so it can swing and touch the other one. That's your switch! Touching = closed, apart = open.
- Test it: wire battery โ fastener A โ (paper clip) โ fastener B โ buzzer โ back to battery. Swing the clip to buzz!
- Part 2: Steady-hand game. Bend the long wire into a wavy, twisty shape. Push both ends into clay so it stands up.
- Make a small loop (about 2 cm wide) at the end of a short piece of wire. This is your wand. Put the loop around the wavy wire before you fix the second end down!
- Wire it up: battery + โ wavy wire. Wand โ buzzer โ battery โ.
- Now guide the loop from one end to the other without touching. If you touch, BZZZ! Time yourself and challenge friends.
๐ฌ What's happening?
A switch is just two pieces of metal that can touch or not touch. In the steady-hand game, the wavy wire and the wand are the two halves of a switch! When the loop touches the wire, the circuit loop is closed and the buzzer sounds. Metal lets electricity flow easily (it's a conductor). Air between the wire and the wand doesn't (it's an insulator).
